Fasteners

Fasteners hold our world together. In construction, at the office, or on our clothing, fasteners are vital to keeping things together.  You most likely have a stapler, paper clips, and rubber bands to organize your papers and other small items. Your house is constructed with fasteners including (but not limited to) nuts and bolts, screws and nails. If you have carpeting, you have carpet strips also known as tack strips and carpet staples. The molding around your house is fastened with brads Door-frames, doorknobs, cabinet doors and drawers require screws. Furniture such as tables, chairs, and desks require nuts and bolts or screws.  Screws, nails, and wall anchors are often used for wall hangings such as pictures, mirrors, and clocks. Zip ties are used to keep electric cords and cables together.

In the Toolbox

Fasteners are a “must-have” in the toolbox so that time isn’t wasted going to the nearest hardware or home improvement store every time you want to hang a picture or make a small repair. Fasteners are sold both individually and in packaged sets such as sets for picture hanging. The set typically includes small nails, eyelet screws, and picture-hanging wire (for heavier wall hangings). Multipurpose kits that contain screws, nails, wall anchors, picture hangers and more are very economical. For the wood in your house, keep a kit with a variety of wood screws. It’s also a good idea to keep a kit of nuts, bolts, washers and screws in the toolbox.

Keep It Fastened

Tack strips hold your carpet down. Over time, they become loose and pose a safety risk. The molding around door-frames sometimes separates from the wall and needs to be nailed back in place. Left as is, the molding can be damaged and may need to be replaced, which is more expensive than using a few brad nails to repair it first. Loose screws, nuts and bolts, and nails can be unsightly. Doorknobs, cabinet handles and doors or drawer pulls swinging loosely or even missing should be repaired as soon as possible. Furniture will move unnecessarily when there is a loose or missing bolt. If it isn’t repaired it may fall apart and injure someone.
