A very important tool I think every girl needs is a handy-dandy hammer. No matter how lazy you are, at some point you’re bound to want to hang a picture or maybe just kill a spider.

Did you know that there is a wide variety of hammers to choose from? Oh, by the way there is no hammer called “handy-dandy”. However, depending on the task, you may need a claw hammer, a tack hammer or maybe even a sledgehammer.

But how do you know which hammer or hammers to put in your toolbox?

Whether you have pets or children or artistic works, you probably have pictures on the wall. Most likely, you have a claw hammer for the simple task of driving a nail or removing one. If you don’t have one, we recommend this basic tool for your toolbox. Claw hammers fall into one of two groups: framing or finish hammers. They are offered in a variety of weights ranging from 7 to 32 ounces. Claw hammers are a great all-purpose tool. These hammers are designed for wood projects – not metal.

Framing Hammer

Framing hammers are used for framing wooden houses. They are used for pounding or removing larger nails. The claw is straight so that large nails can be removed and it can also be used as a crowbar

Finishing Hammer

Finish hammers are used to hang picture frames or mirrors.  The head is lightweight – usually weighing less than 20 ounces with a 16 inch or less handle.  The claw is curved so that nails can be easily removed. When properly used, there is little to no damage to the surrounding area – perfect for when you miss the nail and accidentally hit your thumb!

Handy-Dandy Hammer for Upholstery and More

The upholsterer’s hammer (a.k.a. tack hammer) is a hammer with a small claw. Use this hammer for size small nails and brads furniture such as chairs and sofas. Also, this particular hammer is used for cabinetwork, molding, and trim.
