The grass is getting greener, thicker, and taller. Perhaps a dandelion, clover patch or milkweeds can be found here and there. Yes, it’s time to bring out the lawn mower! (Hopefully a riding mower, if you’re a Lazy-Girl like us!)

But first – your lawn mower may need a little maintenance.

Winterized Mower

Some owners winterize their mowers by removing the oil and gas from the tanks before storing them and then they replace the oil and gas when they mow the first time of the season.  Some owners, replace the spark plug and fuel filter as well.

Before Mowing First Time of Season

If you did not winterize your mower, you need to know that professionals recommend that the gas be changed if it is older than 30 days to ensure proper octane and that there are no gummy deposits.  The oil in your mower’s engine requires maintenance much like your car. It should be checked regularly as well as changed.

Fuel Filter and Spark Plug

If you experience difficulty starting your push mower, and you have fresh oil and gas, you may have a dirty or clogged fuel filter and need to replace it. If your mower is difficult to start, dies frequently, requires more fuel than usual, misfires, or pops while running, you may need to replace the spark plug.

Belts, Blades, and More

Over time, belts get worn and may need to be tightened or even replaced.  Blades get dull and when they do, your lawn may look as though you only ran over it. Blades can be sharpened or even replaced and you can have that nice clean cut yard again.

A little lawn mower maintenance can go a long way to preventing big problems later. These are only very basic tips about mowers. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for specific details and additional information regarding your lawn mower.

Safety Tip! – Wear a hat & sunscreen – as well as closed-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear protection, and a face mask.
